Windows updates are essential to keep your computer functioning in the most effective way possible. Understanding how these updates work can save you time and protect your data. Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about Windows updates.

What Are Windows Updates?

Windows updates are regular patches and improvements released by Microsoft to improve its operating system. These updates may include security fixes, driver updates, and even so new features. They also provide security fixes that will significantly reduce the chances of hacker and spyware attacks.

Why Are Windows Updates Important

Even though a lot of users tend to ignore Windows updates, skipping them can leave your device vulnerable to cyberattacks and bugs. Microsoft uses these updates to patch security loopholes that hackers may exploit and fix system crashes so your software runs more efficiently.

Types of Windows Updates

There are several types of Windows updates, each one with a different purpose. Security updates usually fix known vulnerabilities and are often released quickly in response to threats. Feature updates, on the other hand, add new functionality or design changes to the operating system. Cumulative updates bundle together multiple improvements and are typically released once a month.

How Often Should You Update?

Microsoft usually releases major Windows updates once or twice a year, while smaller updates and patches are issued monthly.

What Happens If You Don’t Update?

Not updating your system might seem harmless, but outdated systems can experience reduced performance, compatibility issues with new software, and an increased risk of viruses or malware.

What Happens If I Have a Problem During a Windows Update?

To prepare for any issues due to bugs or poor installation, make sure your data is safe and you have at least 20% of your hard drive free. If your system crashes during an update, try pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del to open the Task Manager, where you may be able to cancel the installation process.

If that doesn’t work, restart your computer by pressing the reset button or temporarily removing the battery. Windows will often restart normally and return to the update. If you continue to have problems, try booting into safe mode by pressing F8 on the Windows Start icon. From safe mode, you can also try a system restore using the system recovery options, or a start-up repair from the same menu.

How to Check for Windows Updates

You can check for updates by going to Settings > Windows Update. From there, you’ll see if updates are available, their type, and if they require a restart.

What’s New with Windows 11 Updates?

Microsoft has released a new update on June 26. Now, Windows settings has a new home page that show important system details, such as security status, update compliance, device health, or account info. This feature only shows up on computers managed by a company’s IT team  and it helps employees or administrators see the status of their device without digging through multiple menus.

Users in the European Economic Area (EEA) will notice updates with how links and files open. When a default browser is set, Windows may now automatically pin it to the Taskbar and Start Menu for quicker access.
